Instead of Turkey Try Buffalo for Thanksgiving

Why buffalo? For starters it’s very very local. Secondly, there are two buffalo ranches in our area where we know the animals graze on prairie grasses and are treated well.

At the top of our list is Wild Idea Buffalo Company. Dan and Jill O’Brien raise their buffalo on the Cheyenne River Ranch west of the Badlands. They are committed to raising healthy animals on healthy grasslands. Their animals are harvested in the field—never see the inside of a truck or a feedlot. No growth hormones, no antibiotics. As Jill says, “Every pound of Wild Idea Buffalo meat you buy helps support our goal of returning the buffalo back to its native prairies and restoring the Great Plains.”

Wild Idea Buffalo has an outlet in Rapid Valley. Call 716-0572 for directions. You can also buy this meat at the Fitness Plus exercise club at the Baken Park shopping center in Rapid City. They are open every day.

A second buffalo ranch we highly recommend is the 777 Ranch owned by Mimi Hillenbrand. Here’s what Mimi has to say:

Thanks for posting bison for Thanksgiving. The 777 Ranch is located in Fairburn, SD. Our bison are all grass fed now and have a wonderful life on the range free of antibiotics, hormones etc. They have the best life grazing on healthy, diverse grasslands. Bison meat, and specifically grass fed, is low in cholesterol, low in fat, and high in all of the omegas, plus it just tastes great. I can tell you the life of the animals from conception to your plate. We do not finish our animals but we try to process them when the grass is at its most nutritious state so the flavor is at its peak. Rapid City locals can buy 777 bison at Prairie Edge, Main Street Market, and Good Earth Natural Foods in Spearfish. It is served at Tally’s, Delmonico’s, Thirsty’s, Adoba Hotel, and the Surgery Center. We raise animals as naturally possible with preserving the integrity of the American Bison in mind. We are proud of our animals and we believe we have a very good product that supports sustainability, conservation, and a healthy product for our consumers.
